Our Secondary School Kids

Our kids did exceptionally well on the National Exams. The extra study time with a teacher in the evenings payed off. They are very pleased and the younger kids now know how important those evening classes are.

Secondary school is equivalent to High School in the United States.  Going away from home is always scary and it is no different for the 7 kids from our family. Secondary school is a boarding school. King David Academy, a school in Kigali, has accepted to take our kids at a reduced rate because we are a home for orphans and abandoned children. We are blessed as we could not send the kids to a better school nor could we afford the full tuition cost.

Leaving them there was difficult and the first week they all wanted to come home. It is better now, but the food is not as good as home. Sound familiar?

Our first Scholarships for 2009

I am preparing an end of the year report and will send that progress report in January 2009, but for now December has been a wonderful month at Urukundo village.

We are able to award sponsorships for education in a new neighborhood of children.

Johnny, a youth leader in our area and two mothers receiving the scholarship gift. 26 kids in this poor community will attend primary school 2009. We are making a difference.

We are very close to reaching our goal of 300 orphans and poor children living in South Province and Kigali City. I am sure those gifts are on the way. I will be pleased to announce our success in the progress report in January which should be finished soon.

We have posted many pictures on the web site. These kids are a few more and the caregiver from Mpushi who loves them.

I do want to thank everyone who opened their hearts and gave so that these children and others will have an education. The Spirit of Christmas was evident as many gave education gifts to our children as a gift to honor family members and friends.

This is one grateful mama.

Scholarship Fund Reaches 127 (only 173 more to our goal)

This project is a perfect example of how so little can go incredibly far in Rwanda.

A $15 donation covers one child for an entire year including: school fees, a uniform, shoes, a backpack, pencils, and notebooks.  All of this is purchased for only $15.  (and note that Hope Made Real, as a volunteer organization, passes on 100% of the donation.)

Our goal was to send 300 children to school for 2009 and I'm proud to say we've so far raised scholarships for 127 children!

Our Goal for 2009: 300

Scholarships given in 2008: 240

Number of gifts to date: 127

Scholarships not yet funded: 173

To help you see the amazing impact you are having, we thought we would share with you the faces and names of 75 of the children who will have the benefit of an education in 2009.

We Sent 250 Children to School in 2008Can We Send 300 Children in 2009?

(Aline and Natete enjoying biscuits and tea outside the office in the morning.)

It only costs $15 to send a child to school in Rwanda. No matter how many times I hear that, it is always staggering to me. $15 is so little compared to the impact of an education on a child.

We fund the education of children both inside Urukundo Village and in the larger community. In late 2007, you proudly gave scholarships to 250 children who otherwise would not have been able to go to school and those children have had the benefit of schooling. If you sponsored a child last year, please think about renewing your scholarship gift again this year and perhaps an additional child if you can afford it. For 2009, let's aim for 300 children, 50 more than last year.

Please make sure your scholarship reaches Hope Made Real by December 1st. Thank you again for all you have done.
